Feedback Needed — Singapore, or the NHS?

Intending to return to Singapore to work, or does the NHS seem more appealing?

Health Minister Khaw Boon Wan, has announced earlier on in the year that restructured hospitals are looking into giving pre-employment grants to Singaporeans studying medicine overseas.

These grants will cover 60-80%% of tuitions fees in the Year 4/5 of your medical education, amounting to approx $50,000. In return, you will serve a 4 year bond in Singapore upon graduation.

An alternative proposed by MOHH in attracting YOU back is a Sign-on bonus of $10,000 in addition to a relocation fund of $3000. You will then serve a 2 year bond with the hospital. Do bear in mind that as a foreign-trained doctor, it takes 2 years to attain full registration with the Singapore Medical Council.

NB the Sign on bonus is for all foreign-trained Singaporean doctors returning home to work, while the relocation fee will cover the cost of air-tickets/ moving costs etc. This is an alternative which MOHH is exploring and it may or may not be implemented along with the pre-employment grants. Successful applicants for the pre-employment grant will not be eligible for the Sign-on bonus scheme.

Q1. Which scheme attracts you better?
A: Pre- employment grants
B: Sign-on Bonus + Relocation Fee

Q2. What is your biggest deterrent in returning to Singapore to work, if any? (e.g. working hours, starting pay, etc)

Q3. Any suggestions on what can attract you back home?

Q4. (APPLICANTS ONLY) MOHH will be conducting employment interviews later in the year. What would be a preferred period of time for interviews. ( 1-2 week from August onwards)

Please copy-paste the questions above send your replies to smsuk.2010@gmail.com as soon as possible, latest by Monday, 19th April 2010.

On behalf of MOHH, thank you in advance for the time and effort!

Regards,

The 16th SMS-UK Committee

Volunteering Opportunities @ SGH

Patients Ambassador Programme

This programme is essentially to assist patients who are “lost” in the hospital, to help them find their way around the hospital, bring them to the clinic, help them queue for medication, help them to get a wheelchair from the wheelchair bay etc. This activities are all happening within the hospital.
SGH is a huge place and we have found many instances where patients spent a lot of time trying to find their way around the hospital. This is where volunteers like you will provide value-added service.

This programme is suitable for volunteers who are available during weekdays and they can work in shifts. Timeslots are either: 9.30am – 1pm 12.30pm – 6pm

We require volunteers to commit to at least 1 session per week. They must also commit for a minimum of 1 – 3 months and not one-off. Ability to speak English, mandarin or some dialect would be helpful.

There will be an orientation session for interested volunteers, if we can gather at least 10 of us.
The orientation will cover a tour of the hospital band other essential information to help you cover your duties.

Merry Melodies

“Merry Melodies” is a newly launched programme which involves live performance by budding talents to patients at their bedside. This programme also provides a platform for musicians to spread the joy of music to patients and provide company and entertainment.

Listening to music can soothe your soul, but recent studies have shown that it can also heal your physical body, by relieving anxiety and stress, inducing relaxation and providing a pleasant distraction and bringing comfort to hospital patients.

Performers can play instruments like flute, guitar, organ, saxophone is groups of 3 or 4 (max) and move around the wards. They can also play at the clinic area which opens until 5pm or at the Wards during 12 – 5pm.

If you are interested in volunteering, please email smsuk.2010@gmail.com with:

a) Your Name
b) Univeristy/ Year of Study
c) Contact Number ( both UK and Singapore)
c) Activity Choice: Patient Ambassador / Merry Melodies ( or both)
e) Preferred Start/ End Date

Please copy-paste the template above in your reply! Thank you!

Regards,

The 16th SMS-UK Committee
